Movie Review: Searching

Searching

I’ve been picking out some pretty great movies lately and I had to tell you about the movie Searching, on Netflix. The way it was filmed and written was really done well. If you like investigative online sleuthing you will LOVE this movie.

The movie had an in-the-moment feel and brought some serious security issues we need to be aware of while being online. Our children may live in our homes but we may not know everything we should. This movie also impressed me by the way it showed different ways you may be able to use in order to also help find missing people. We can take it for what it is. I felt strongly vindicated as a parent with trusting your gut. As parents we need to be disruptive and nosey about their lives. When you’re a parent it’s your only job.

Spoiler alert! It ends with a twist. I hope you enjoy the movie and the way the director and editor created it. Take care!

A Review and a bit more: Brain on Fire

It took me a long time to do this review because it hit me pretty close to home. This post will be a little bit more than a review.

Brain on Fire is a movie based on the true story and book Brain on Fire My Month Of Madness by Susannah Cahalan. She writes her battle with her own mind as she waits for a diagnosis. It is an absolutely compelling story of human strength and resilience and also highlights the flaws in our perception of healthcare for the mind.

Be prepared with a box of tissue because this is a movie we can all relate to. I asked a few of my friends and family to watch it as I felt a little exposed because of all the symptoms she was showing and her struggle to try to tell anyone that something was not right.

I can honestly say that this movie depicts and most accurately describes what my brain goes through before and after seizures and complications from brain damage caused by Multiple Sclerosis. The hardest part to watch in this movie was the confusion and the withdrawal she goes through. I have felt this first hand. It’s a slow decline where I would notice I was “spacing out” and couldn’t focus on my computer screen. To this day when there are a lot of noises and people it can overwhelm me and I literally can’t understand what anyone is saying although they are speaking perfect English. Over stimulation and stress can leave me so confused I become bedridden for days from brain exhaustion. To be so misunderstood as “lazy” “bitchy” etc. my entire life only to find out that my complaints were more than legitimate. The brain damage caused by MS is irreversible and equivalent to a traumatic blow to the head, only nothing externally has happened. Like in the movie, when your own brain is sick and injured it is the worst feeling of loss, confusion and frustration any being can go through. I will also agree with the recovery process. It is a long and ongoing travel to a full recovery and I’ve learned how to adapt to some of my inabilities. I can tell you first hand, it is not easy relearning how to do basic things like walking, writing and learning to trust your own mind even though it has failed me time and time again. I have to tell myself daily who I am, how many kids do I have, who my family members are.

The impact her condition caused on her entire family is also a very difficult thing for me to watch. I still struggle with not wanting to ask for help for fear of burdening my loved ones. I accept that I do have positive people around me who do enjoy helping me and it’s not so bad asking for help.

It is so important that I share my personal journey because I see it every day. More and more people are being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, BiPolar disorder, Depression… it’s overwhelming and terrifying to know and feel that you are losing your mind and you don’t know why or what is real.

I wish I could tell you that everyone is helpful and that everyone is understanding and kind, but that is what Hollywood is for. I’ve experienced bullying, abuse, disbelief.. the truth is not everyone is kind and looking out for your best interests. Some family and friends didn’t believe me when I said I felt like I was dying. I’ve been called a liar, a “great actress”, “she’s not really sick” and once the initial shock of the diagnosis, I was still told there’s nothing wrong and I need to get over it. I look back on how wrongly I was treated and I think about those who remain trapped in their minds and lose their ability to even verbalize how they feel before they even get close to a proper diagnosis. All of the negative parts of finding a diagnosis are born out of ignorance and there is a quick cure for that. Knowledge.

I highly recommend this movie found on Netflix and I hope it helps you to understand how to navigate through finding a diagnosis for yourself. I hope it also helps you understand how complex the disease of the mind is. It is a terrifying and life threatening road that many don’t make out of alive. Susannah Cahalan received the cure in time and this movie leaves a lot of promise for future research and cures for brain diseases.

My next stop will be to pick up the book!

Hope you enjoy the movie!

Much love,

Review: Le Petit Marseillais

I was sent some samples of Le Petit Marseillais Shower Gel in Mandarin & Lime scent for review. It couldn’t come at a better time right in the hottest days of summer and when I’m on the hunt for a new summer soap!

The shower gel has a green tint and it the scent was full of fresh citrus and sweetness. I have extremely dry skin, especially when my skin is transitioning to the humid heat.

I applied it directly on a washcloth and began to scrub. The gel didn’t lather up with suds like previous shower gels I’ve tried, but I gave it my best effort. So as far as suds it’s on the low-key side. My skin was left feeling refreshed and squeaky clean.

After my shower, I made sure I didn’t add any lotion or moisturizers to get the full before and after effects of the gel. My skin began to dry up and look scaly. The package did say it was “extra gentle” but I don’t think my skin agrees. I tried it a second time ( I was given 2 samples ) but this time I added the shower gel to my getting ready routine to see how it held up under more normal conditions. I, again, applied the shower gel with a washcloth and the same results of no suds and no lather. This time I used moisturizer as usual and my skin was still dry just not as bad as the first trial.

I didn’t particularly find anything life changing about Le Petit Marseillais’ Shower Gel. Yes it is milder than other soaps and gels with a fantastic scent and I found a 400ml bottle at Walmart for $4.97 CDN. I would recommend this product as a mild daily soap for use in travel to the beach or camping. A great alternative to messy bars of soap for children.

Final thoughts

My favourite feature is the scent, it is mild and lingers pleasantly on your skin which is extra nice during hot weather. I was expecting a thicker gel consistency but it was more liquid like the consistency of syrup. If you like bubbles and suds you won’t find them in a bottle of this product and it left my skin dry. It’s affordable for families, it’s available at stores like Walmart and you can find it on Amazon as well.

Score: 3/5

✔️ Affordable

✔️ Great Scent

✔️ Available in Walmart and Amazon

✖️ Left my skin drier than normal

✖️ Very runny not a gel consistency

More reviews to come! ☺️❤️Much love,SS 💃🏻👠

Review: Evil Genius

This documentary series is one of the best ones Netflix has released. It raises intriguing questions like if someone is mentally ill are they capable of murder? Could love and obsession be the driving force in this case? The beheading of the victim was not necessary, how could they “ok” that? How did it get so far?

It took me on a psychological journey, complete actual footage of the victim’s death. I remember, back in 2003 watching this on the News. Evetyone just stood watching him. You feel so helpless listening to this man crying out to them that he can hear this ticking bomb going and all the policemen could do is stand around with their guns out and just wait for something to happen. It was such a tragedy to watch and for the families to even get the news through the media.

One of the most astonishing points of the series was when the several law departments scattered all over the place were more concerned about who was in charge rather than who committed the crime!

I’m so intrigued by this story and wonder if there is another season in the making. Until then, make sure you add this show to your summer nights when you want a bit of creepy intrigue.

Let me know your thoughts!

Happy Watching

Movie Review: The Founder

This is a great rags-to-riches story. A lot of people don’t know that the McDonalds corporation is actually based on realty deals and land purchases. The movie takes you on a journey through the ups and downs of growing a business.

There are twists and turns that organically develop emotionally with family and friendships. Ruthless business decisions are aggressively made showing the destruction of a lot of relationships. I love business development it’s exciting and fun yet filled with some hard decisions.

They say business is like swimming with sharks, it could be true in many cases, however in my years of diving in and out of corporate life things always even itself out.

Everything that crumbles will be rebuilt. Everything wrong will be made right. Things may seem bleak and even cutthroat but maybe we have to be challenged in order to push ourselves passed the tough times.

Watch it on Netflix

My upgraded gadgets, kinda

It’s time for the yearly hype over the new iPhone, we are now on version 8. I have a different strategy for staying in the phone game.

I used to work in a computer store, which sold cellphones too. Fido was a huge trend at the time and Bell was considered high end. The networks have evolved completely and so was the hardware. As you may already know. I am a gadget girl you can even say I’m a bit of a electronics junkie. The electronics game is fast paced and can cost you quite a bit of money.

I never get the first models that come out for example, the iPhone 8 will be released in a couple of weeks, I buy the iPhone 7. I get more bonuses, promotions and incentives. In general, more options for less money.

If there’s a major change in design and features of electronics (like a Sony PlayStation) I wait for a year for the bugs and glitches to be fixed before I buy it.

For apps, there are so many to choose from. I try as many apps as I can. Apps like social media, photo and video, filters, adding keyboards, marketing, business, payments, etc I have found so many great apps from trying all the newest available in the AppStore.

I recently bought an iPhone 7. 7 is my favourite number so I predictively had to get it. I agonized about the 7 or the 7 Plus for months. For women who understand, I wanted to get a bigger phone so I could type easier with long nails. I know, it’s boujee but whatevs I like to have nice things. I need to be reachable at all times for my children emergencies or doctor appointments..etc

Aside from the usual kerfuffle with carrier activations and plans, I couldn’t be happier. So far so good, my relationship with my phone is growing. Lol I know I’m weird.

Have a great one!

Review: Annie’s Home Macaroni & Cheese

I received the Spring Voxbox and it had a ton of items to test out.  This is the first time I have received complimentary food to review so off we go…  As a proud Foodie I couldn’t wait to try everything so this is one out of many reviews that are coming up soon.

The biggest critics of mac n’ cheese are my boys so this was a fun review to do.  I read the ingredients right away and the rule of thumb is the first 3 ingredients are the most of what the product is made with. I don’t know about others, but for my boys and I, this was the best  boxed mac ‘n cheese, dare I say better than Kraft Dinner.

This literally tasted like fresh cheddar cheese and my boys requested that I order this by bulk.

I found this in Walmart for $      I highly recommend this over Kraft Dinner, the price is more than Kraft but it is so worth it for those lazy days when you only want to spend 20 minutes for a quick snack.

Let me know what you think when you get a chance to try it, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Review: Logan movie

loganmovie

If you are a fan of the X-Men then you will absolutely love this movie! Yes, my brother collected almost all the Wolverine comics and he’d let me read them.  I was hooked by the storylines.  The whole mutant alliance is an amazing one and this whole movie kept it inline with the story of Logan, I was also proud that he is Canadian.

I’ll try not to ruin the whole movie but from the trailers you know that a girl was involved.  The action in this movie was nonstop and I felt a very strong relationship which was a perfect blend of new and old X-Men.

If you’re interested in watching this be prepared to go on a journey full of hurdles.  I will watch this movie over and over.. it’s THAT good.

If you’re looking for a Friday Flick or something to watch this weekend, I would totally recommend this movie.  For those Action movie watchers, this movie will not disappoint you.

Let me know what you think!

Review: Organik Botanik Brown Sugar Face Scrub

In the midst of our unpredictable Canadian Spring, there comes a time when we Canadian gals have to, what I call, “descale”.  This means all the dry indoor air leaves my skin so dry, I literally feel like I need to shed layers of Winter skin… I know, gross right?

I guess my new “jam” has been Winner’s and I’ve been having good luck finding little steals here and there.. But this.. this right here…

Organik Botanik Brown Sugar Face Scrub

This was the WORST product I’ve ever bought in my LIFE!!  At first, it felt like other facial scrubs when I rinsed it out I noticed my skin was a bit shiny like I had put oil on my face.   To this very day my face is a hot mess!  My forehead and cheeks feel like sandpaper and I have cystic acne on my chin!!  When I break out it’s usually one angry pimple, but this??!!  OMG it destroyed my skin!!  With this in mind, I’m going back to my favourite skincare treatment  (Biotherm Plankon Essence) to fix this face somehow.

I paid $7.99CDN for this, so basically I paid $8.00 for my break out!  It’ll be a while before try anything like this again! lol

Hope you guys had a great day.. I’m going back to living with a bag over my head until this angry breakout goes away.  If you see this anywhere.. keep walking, it’s horrible.

Review: Bamboo Shampoo and Conditioner by Renpure

IMG_8432

Yet another find from Winners, Renpure’s Bamboo Shampoo and Conditioner, I needed to find a mild yet effective shampoo and conditioner.  I have been trying to repair my hair for the last month and this has helped a great deal.  I had to get used to the little amount of suds it made but the scent was incredible and the conditioner was light and kept my hair under control especially during the new humid weather.  I’m falling more and more in love with Winners and I will be visiting their sister company Marshalls soon.  I’m working on footage for my comparisons with Winners and Marshalls with some video footage of me shopping at both stores.  Stay tuned! 🙂

If you’re looking for something to protect your colour don’t use this product, it is extremely strong and could possibly strip the colour out of your hair.  Other than that, this combo smells sooo great and it was a nice change from all the deep conditioners I have been using during the winter months.  Give it a try and let me know how it worked for you.

Much love,

SS
