My 5 Favourite Things About Winter

It’s officially the end of the first month of 2019 and a cold snap (a fast drop in temperature) which has effected most of part of Canada and many parts of the world. This drastic drop to minus freezing levels may be alarming to many but it’s a normal winter to me.

Most of us Canadians have our main staples to get us through the harsh Northern winds. From boots to coats to gloves, etc everyone has their faves. Here are 5 of my favourite things about winter that help me get through the brisk cold which I truly love.

#1 A Warm Cozy Blanket

A warm, preferably fuzzy, cozy blanket is a MUST! I have always had a throw or blanket on hand and ready for those days when I want to snuggle while watching TV. When the house is quiet my dog Vinny cuddles up right on my lap. I look forward to the quiet days that I can have a nice winter afternoon nap.I have definitely passed the blanket readiness down to my children. I often see them carry their blankets draped around their shoulders while making their way out their rooms in the morning. I have also caught my dog, Judge, steal a fuzzy blanket or two to lay on.

#2 Colourful Socks and Leg warmers

If you’ve followed me on my social media you will know that I have a huge admiration for socks. I gravitate towards knee high socks in particular, if I see a pair of socks that catch my eye while I’m out shopping I buy them. I don’t have snow pants which would be ideal during this -38 degrees Celsius weather. The next best things for Canadian women is a good pair of leg warmers.

Growing up in the ’80s, leg warmers were known as fashion statements of jazz dancers and ballerinas. Who doesn’t remember “Flashdance”? Although it has been a fashion craze both in and out of eras the use has always been practical and simple. Who would have thought cutting off some tight pants from the knee down to layer them on top of another pair of pants would actually keep someone warm? Whether you pick socks or leg warmers make sure you add some fun colours and bedazzle them up!

#3 A Touque

I have a growing collection of hats and touques to wear for any season. My favourite hats to wear are hands down the classic touque. My all time favourite style are the chunky knitted hats. I have knitted and crocheted so many stiles but the most basic designs are the best!

I especially love the smaller beanies so I can put it in my purse without it taking up too much room.

#4 Hot chocolate beverage

This is a huge fave in my family. There’s something about a warm steamy hot chocolate drink that warms up everything from the inside out. I remember when I was a kid we were taken out on winter field trips for cross country skiing, etc. We were given scalding hot chocolate. It was so hot we all burned out tongues. I doubt they offer that in schools today. Despite the risk of a burned mouth I still order cafe mochas and hot chocolates every winter.

#5 A Fireplace

I’ve been blessed to have grown up with a fireplace. I think they should be mandatory in Canadian households. With the recent 2019 cold snap which dropped temperatures below -20 degrees, having a fireplace was a perfect way to keep the house at a warm cozy temperature.

These are the top 5 things about winter that I actually look forward to. There aren’t very many days left of winter in my part of Canada. I will have to pack up my touques, soon and trade my socks in for a pair of spring shoes and pedicures.

I. Can’t. Wait.

Stay warm!

2016 in Full Swing!

Yes!!  It’s finally here a brand new bouncing baby New Year being just over 1 week young, the future looks bright.

With the new year comes the hard blowing winds and flurries of snow to my part of Canada.  I was expecting the snow and flurries but it spent no time making an ice crust around my neighbourhood.

I have spent the majority of the first week of January easing back into the children’s routine.  Since I rarely like to go out when the weather is this blustery I have to thank the internet for  online shopping once again.  As a mom of 6 kids, 1 girl and 5 boys, I’m always looking out for great items.  Not just the bargain clothing by bulk, but some good quality clothing can also last a lot longer.  As a consumer, of course I want more quality for my money, however I am willing to pay a bit more just for peace of mind that whatever I purchase will come with excellent customer care should I run into any issues.

I hope to open up more to you this year, and show you more of the details of my life through more posts and social media updates.  I have so many things planned  which are coming up very soon.

Thank you to all my oh so loyal readers who have continuously shown me so much support.

I’ll update you all on a daily basis!

Yay for 2016!

Much love my Sweets!

An interesting start

IMG_8531It’s 2015 and with it came the cold weather front complete with blizzards and my favourite… cancelling of school buses.  Being Canadian, I know that a green Christmas equals Jack Frost following quickly behind dusting my corner of the world with frozen water everywhere.  It doesn’t mean I hate the winter or the snow, it’s just that it creates so much work.  For example, if you don’t shovel your walkways, the mail won’t be delivered; you buy a nice pair of boots, but if you don’t clean them off, they will be eaten by the street salt and sand; the floors in every public place you go to is sopping with water and dirt.. to name a few.

What I do love about winter is when the winds are calm and great big fat snowflakes lightly float from the sky.  Currently, we’ve received a huge drop of winter and everything is so white you don’t know where the roads and sidewalks end and begin.

There is no shortage of people coming by offering to shovel my driveway which is always a great thing.  Fortunately, my boys enjoy shovelling as they kick snow at each other.  😀

Yes, I am slightly hibernating, sipping my coffee, watching The Office episodes while doing some crafts.  I guess I shouldn’t complain too much about my life right now lol.

I hope everyone is having a great 2015 start!

Much love to you all and be safe out there in the tundra!

Humidifiers and winterizing your nest

Winter is in full effect and with that comes the added bonus of colds, viruses and flus, the winter months freak me out!  I can’t just open a window and let fresh air in without freezing my toes off which is a total bummer.  Winter has done its job at putting all the trees and plants in hibernation and has forced me to fire up my furnace.  Now that the dry heat is circulating throughout the house I knew it would cause problems with my kids.  My furnace has a humidifier attachment, but it needs to be replaced so, my alternative was to go out and find me a new humidifier.

I went to Walmart and found the humidifier display in the Household department and there were a ton to choose from.  Prices ranged from $20-$169.  I chose the Sunbeam Warm Mist Filter Free Humidifier:

Sunbeam Humidifier

It has 2 settings (low to high humidity)and an “off” option; a small medicine tray by the vent; a clear water container; it can run all night and day; and it has no filter!

I have owned a few humidifiers over the years and I can honestly say I am in an extreme dislike for humidifiers with filters!  They just end up so gross and there’s so much maintenance and cleaning with that extra step.  Being a mom of 6, I don’t want to have to run to the store to constantly replace the filter… it’s just something I’m not into, so the no filter option was a major selling point to me.  My 2 year old had a fever and a dry cough around the same time I bought the humidifier and I am proud to report he’s been having some great sleeps at night and is finally over his cold.

If you’re in need of a good simple humidifier try this one out.  It was $34.96CAD at Walmart which is nice on the budget, has a great output and is surprisingly quiet.

On that note, I’m off to do some Christmas shopping… 😀

I hope you are all having a fabulous day!
